History institutions have been likened to the kitchen table. . . .a comfortable place where a community can gather to reflect, to debate, to plan. They have been described as housing a community’s “collective memory”. They have been called “triggers for social and moral discourse”.
Our region needs just such a place. We need a place to save and honor and share the story of California’s great Central Valley.
The founders of the Fresno Historical Society----children of pioneer families----set a goal back in 1919 to create just such a place. Today, the Society is working to make their vision a reality.
We’re planning a place that will
- tell the story of our Valley---California’s Central Valley
- celebrate the Valley’s cultural diversity
- trace the development of agriculture and agribusiness
- document the region’s immigrant story
- teach our children how to learn history’s lessons
- expand the Society’s archives and make its contents more accessible
- provide a community gathering place
- help us use history to shape our future
We invite you to explore our vision further. Click here (.pdf 4MB).

“He early saw the possibilities of this region and settled down here to make it his home. He deserves the plaudits
of this people . . ."
